Riding an e-scooter in Switzerland: the most important rules

With the e-scooter you are flexible and environmentally friendly on the road. To help you get through traffic safely, here are the most important points about riding, equipment and what is permitted. This information applies to Switzerland. If you are traveling abroad with your scooter, please find out in advance about the rules that apply there - they may differ significantly.

Where are you allowed to ride an e-scooter?

E-scooter are considered light motorcycles in Switzerland - and are subject to clear regulations:

  • ✅ Permitted:
  • - Cycle paths and cycle lanes
  • - If there is no cycle path: the normal roadway
  • ❌ Not permitted:
  • - Sidewalks and pedestrian zones (unless expressly authorized by a corresponding signal)

Traffic rules for e-scooters in Switzerland

  • Maximum speed: 20 km/h plus 10% tolerance - corresponds to up to 22 km/h
  • Minimum age: from 14 years with category M permit, from 16 years without permit
  • For one person only: Riding along is not permitted
  • Helmet: Not compulsory, but highly recommended.

Alcohol on the handlebars

For riding a e-scooter The same alcohol limits apply in Switzerland as for driving a car:

  • 0,5 ‰: legal blood alcohol limit - above this level you are considered unfit to drive
  • From 0.8 ‰: is considered qualified alcoholization with driving disqualification and criminal charges

👉 Don't drink and ride. Drive sober or use public transport and cabs - better safe than sorry.

Equipment of your e-scooter

So that your e-scooter is approved for road use in Switzerland, it must be fitted with the following equipment:

  • White front light & red rear light
  • Two independent brakes
  • Bell as acoustic warning signal

Most VMAX e-scooters are additionally equipped with reflectors and integrated indicators at the front and rear as standard - for greater visibility and maximum safety in road traffic.

Insurance & registration

You do not need a license plate or special liability insurance. Private liability insurance usually covers damage. If in doubt, check your insurance cover.
